Our finished card border art! Here are 5 of our 6 card types. From left to right, they are Celestial, Void, Chaos, Arcane, and Nature. The one that is missing is Earthen, which is our Neutral card type. I will detail these further in a future post.

I'm so happy to announce we've been FUNDED in 13 days on Kickstarter! THANK YOU supporters! Ross and I are pumped! 

We have 10 days left in our Kickstarter, and are now looking toward our fun Stretch Goals. First one is adding a race of Celestial TimeKeeper Steampunk Ratmen race - so strange, it just has to work  ;D If you're a fan of Steampunk, time manipulation spells, "good" characters, and/or Rats, this is the Race you've been missing.

We have a few daily updates for you today, so let's get right to them! First up....

This screenshot is inspired by one of our favorite miniature based board games. Here's a few clues to look for:
1. The staircase
2. The heroes in the party (3 out of 4 staple characters of this board game are shown)
3. The furniture

Can you guess which board game inspired this dungeon? Oh, and Ross says "Keep answer a secret if you took part in the Discord chat about this, but feel free to offer misleading clues"


Next up, Ross did an audio Podcast with The Chicago Gametrepreneur, and I joined in at the very end. It was a lot of fun, and they asked great questions, including what games we'd play if we were stuck on a desert island, what type of music we listen to when we work, and more! Check it out here:

Finally, we have teased a bit about our Insectoid Race characters in the past. Here are some sketches:

As you can see, we have sketches of an Ant, Scorpion Wasp, Giant Yellowjacket, and a Mantis. These will be human sized, which is why were are referring to them as Insectoids vs. insects. Most of these will have flight ability, among other really fun powers.

We will go more in depth with the Insectoids tomorrow, including finished art and animations. Stay tuned!

Hello, Forum Members-

Well, this morning was a bit of a disappointment for Ross and me. We went to sleep last night being at 106% of our goal and getting our art prepared for our first Stretch Goal, the Celestial Steampunk Timekeeper Rats, and woke up to being below our goal at 92%. We were shocked and, honestly hurt, and upon doing further research, discovered a few large pledgers backed out without explanation. Sadly, it appears these "pledgers" were never true supporters and have done this same thing to other similar projects. We have contacted Kickstarter on the matter in hopes this won't happen to others like us. In the meantime, we decided we wanted to share this news with our supporters and fans of Summoners Fate so you can be part of our honest journey.

We've been overjoyed by the encouraging messages we've received from you guys! Please know we read each of them, and they truly mean a lot to Ross and me.

So - what now? Well, we are two pretty tenacious folks and we knew the startup life was not going to be an easy one. We are even more determined to make the Kickstarter a success with our 8 days left, and still have quite big plans for our game!

One of those big plans is what we alluded to yesterday - an Insectoid race! These are insects that are quite large and humanoid in their actions. Here's a "glamour shot" of some of them:

Don't they look...cute and creepy?! LOL, that's a bit what we were going for. Fun Fact: Ross really likes insects, and knew he wanted to get them into our game as a playable race. He especially likes praying mantises and ants. However, Ross HATES yellowjackets in real life for all the times they've stung him while doing yardwork. He wanted to add them to the game as a way to defeat them on our battlefield! If you feel the same way, these may be the perfect opponent for you!

Today's Daily Update will focus on 2 main topics: Angels and Reptis (Lizardmen).

Here is a new playable character for Summoners Fate, our Angel:

We think she is a great addition to the lineup, and fun to have another flying character. However, we are having trouble deciding on a weapon for her - sword? Mace? Enchanted harp??

Good evening! We are proud to share with you today some hands-on gameplay starring Ross on all of our target platforms. As you will see, our game supports portrait and landscape orientations, as well as adapts for left- and right-handedness with a simple turn of the device.

Our vector graphics scale beautifully to large PC screens and high DPI retina screens. We've received feedback from some of our PC fans about the UI and we are planning to build a custom PC UI as well as support hotkeys and an alternative "zoomed out" interface with more detail/options panels for players that like to have this additional information handy.

We received some great feedback on our 1st hands-on gameplay video we posted yesterday (click here (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg82#msg82) to see). Today, we have a shorter continuation of that video with the same Liche King battle, but this time on the PC.

Next, we had some questions regarding our destructible environment in game. Ross has been working on a dynamic destruction algorithm that will shred and burn things like tables, chairs and such to tiny bits after impact. Here is a quick example using one of our statues:

This is coming to you quite late because we were hoping to get the finished large map play through to you today (thank you to Gundam0518 for suggesting it!). In this video, we answered questions for viewers about the game and our development process, showed a bit about our original board game, and discuss our extensive Warhammer and Reaper miniature collections!

Finally, with over three days still to go in our campaign, the Celestial Steampunk Timekeeper Rats goal is still in reach! Below are concept sketches for how we're envisioning the appearance of this race as well as some game mechanics we have planned that will allow you to manipulate time.

As you can see from the sketch above, the rats are inspired by Victorian-era clothing and have clockwork gear weapons and gadgetry. I really wanted these to be original characters, not typical dirty sewer rats, but rats with sophisticated tastes and culture. I also really wanted to find a way to bring in the fun Steampunk side to Summoners Fate and CLEARLY we think of rats when we think of this culture. ;D ;) I also wanted to go against the archetype that rat races in games means they are "bad" or "evil" characters; on the contrary, ours are Celestial and good characters that manipulate time and order.

You might be wondering how we are planning to implement manipulation of time in our game mechanics. Here are just a few examples of what will be possible with our game engine:

Time Trap: When unit enters target space, undo the last interaction and end that unit's turn. (Traps are deployed on the board in secret)
Turn Back Time: Rewind to the start of your last turn and remove this card from the game.
Time Travel: Remove your Summoner from the board until the start of your next turn.

Hello, all!

We've been getting some really fun and inventive suggestions for characters and spells in our Share Your Ideas (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?board=4.0) board. Check them out, let us know what you think of the suggestions coming in, and leave some of your own!

Recently, Ross has been working on adapting the UI layout to better suit the needs of PC players. See the mock-up here and read his notes below:

Previously, he’d received feedback that the larger UI (scaled from mobile) was unpleasant. Here’s some of Ross’s notes on this new design for PC (and possibly iPad as well):

I've increased the playable grid space to 9x14, further reduced the UI size, and balanced the left and right sides by unwrapping the multi function buttons to reveal their other states up front (ex: replay and skip). Circular style is replaced with rectangles to better fit the interface. The non-playable grid area is shadowed around the edges. This is just a layout mock to show scale and placement. Artistically, I'm thinking it might be cool to have the blue UI bar itself be made out of stone, perhaps vegetation wrapped or inset with gold trim. The mana bar would need the mana symbol itself incased in some sort of decorative texture (perhaps a circular extension of the stone/ruins itself) and something to make the bar look more like glass tube/alchemy. I still like the idea of symbolic buttons (vs. text) for the four secondary functions - better for localization and artistically more interesting. End turn button - up for debate - that could be text since it's the most important function. Behind the cards, it might be nice to have some kind of decorative radial arc extending above the bar. There's room to support more cards here as well (for abilities that allow you to draw beyond three) by arranging them in a fan.

In our Monday update, we shared some sketches of these wonderful creatures, and today I'm excited to share these beautiful full color renders that our art team graciously made a top priority. From left to right, we have the Time Bombardier, a ranged unit that can throw "time bombs" that damage and slow enemy movement, the Time Keeper, a powerful Summoner with the power to cast Celestial Time Spells, and the Time Warrior, a cunning melee fighter with hyper speed and lightning reflexes.

Post project processing on Kickstarter may take up to 2 weeks before we can send out our backer surveys. We will keep you informed on the status.

Several of you have asked about whether or not we will still include the Celestial Steampunk Timekeeper Rats for launch. While we didn't quite hit the stretch goal, we did make it halfway there and that surely counts for something. We will include the rat characters and time spells we've shown so far for launch. As for our full plans on the full race, we have said that Summoners Fate will run as a service with regular content updates. Anyone up for a steampunk time-travel themed first expansion? ;)

He swoops onto the battlefield, his skin is silvery-blue with gleaming icicles. He casts his icy stare onto his enemies, and braces his frozen talons into the ground as he lets out a mighty breath of frigid ice and certain death....

Meet the Frost Dragon! We teased him in a recent post of one of our larger maps, now get a good look at one of our newest playable characters (200+ will be available!).

Insectoid Variations
I just posted (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=31.msg177#msg177) an update in our Character, Spells & Art folder with our new variations on some of Insectoids - the Praying Mantis and the Ant. Check it out:

You'll see quadruped vs. biped options, plus different available colors. What do you think? My favorite is the the middle bottom right, the red quadruped Ant. Ross likes the top left brown quadruped Mantis.

Squirrel Battin'

While fun (and sad for the Squirrel, especially without his armor), this GIF showcases one of our unique Summoners Fate combat tactics:  OVERKILL. This is taken from a recent article (http://www.indiedb.com/games/summoners-fate/news/designing-unique-tactical-combat-mechanics-for-summoners-fate) Ross wrote for IndieDB.com:

Many turn-based tactics games have a counter attack mechanic where an enemy you choose to attack will immediately attack back in response, causing both units to exchange damage. I tried this, but it was a bit funny when I pegged a giant cyclops against an itty bitty squirrel. How does a squirrel muster up the energy to attack after being splat? So, I devised a concept called “overkill” that prevents an enemy from counter attacking if the damage is greater than their remaining health. Big shark trumps little fish.

I think we can all agree the squirrel is "overkilled"

Each character gets one counter attack per round. Counter attack is triggered if:

1. Character is attacked from the front/sides (no counter attack for rear, that’s where our move gesture/directional control helps)
2. Character is able to legally attack (ex: not frozen)
3. Character’s remaining life after the attack is greater than or equal to 0.

If the damage dealt is greater than remaining life, bringing them to a negative life total, they are “overkilled” and get no counter attack. With this mechanic, who you choose to attack and when you choose to attack them now results in vastly different outcomes, creating very diverse tactical scenarios. For example, a faster unit might sneak behind a bigger enemy to “whittle him down” enabling a unit in the front that would otherwise get killed by a counter attack to now survive and fight another day.

Ross & I are stuck on a great weapon for our upcoming Incubus character. Can you help?

The Incubus has some variations in mythology. For Summoners Fate, we are defining our Incubus as a young, manipulative demon and part of our Horror race. Our game keeps things fairly PG, so we will not be looking to explore the seductive side too much; rather, we're looking for a fun, different, but definitely evil weapon(s) this character could wield. Include a picture for reference  ;D

Today I "unmasked" and delved more into the Marauders. About them (taken from here (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=51.msg215#msg215)):

The Marauders are a group of tough bandits who roam the lands looking to plunder, loot, and bring general carnage wherever they go. They are known for their rough language and rougher fighting on the battlefield.

This group once tried to go on the moral path and attempted to join the Ironclads (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=7.0) to protect the Emperor; however, their selfish and brutish behavior made that impossible. Angry at being rejected, they formed their own band - the Marauders. Only this time they do not seek to protect anymore...except only themselves.

Meet our Giant Stag Beetle!

Typical stag beetle are around 2 inches (5 cm) long and are not harmful to humans. However, in the realm of Summoners Fate, our playable Giant Stag Beetle is much larger and much more harmful to humans, animals, and all creatures that populate the battlefield. Watch out for those huge and deadly mandibles!

We at D20Studios have always been fans of mythology and the various creatures in these fantastical and visionary stories. We are/will be including many creatures both well-known and more obscure from various mythologies from around the world.

Here is a small sample of some of our finished mythological creatures. This includes our newly-finished Hydra - a huge monster with varied snake-like heads (in our case, 5)- and the Manticore - which has a human-like head, the body of a lion, draconic wings and a tail of a scorpion.

Meet the Gladiator!

Having been manumitted, the Gladiator roams the battlefields of Summoners Fate with his steady net and harpoon, his trusty choices in battle. Though he is free, he cannot escape his memories of the things he's seen, the things he's done...He seeks a "good death," yet has been unable to find anyone up to the task.

Ross want to see if there would be interest in a Live Session with him to walk through his newly-developed Game Editor Tool for Summoners Fate.

To elaborate, with the large amount of unique game content we have created (and planned) for Summoners Fate, Ross built a system to easily create, add, and modify content, including characters, environments, placables, levels, etc (I enjoy playing with the editor tool!). The live session would demonstrate and showcase his progress.

Meet our Oni! This demon ogre stomps the battlefield wielding his kanabō and looking to bring destruction and death. He is absurdly strong and known for being invincible. Think you have what it takes to defeat him on the battlefield (or, even more, to PLAY as him?  ??? )

Today's GameDev
Ross is working on the main menu that will look like a campfire for your team to rest & to manage cards, make selections, etc. Instead of doing this through a UI, ours will be inside the game engine, giving a much more immersive experience. It's looking great so far!

New Character
Meet the CARNIFLOWER.

This sentient plant is the thing of nightmares. Its head and neck sway like a snake, it moves quickly on vine "feet," and it's out for revenge for all those who've wronged the environment! Watch out for its bite - razor sharp teeth will clamp down and the plant poison will begin to pulse through your veins...

We're working on some more nature characters, including a protector of the plants we're calling Botanical Sage - she's almost done!

Sketch Spotlight - Kickstarter Reward
Several backers will be receiving custom characters as part of their Kickstarter rewards. We're pleased to share one of these unique player-driven characters. Chris Sides is a close friend of Ross's and his former colleague at EA. For his in-game character, he wanted something appropriate to his fierce expression rocking the beard. A heavily armored warrior seemed like the right direction, but Chris also wanted something unique and unexpected. “Can I be a plate wearer who uses songs to cast spells? Like be super mean and grungy, but play lovely music?”

And so the “Marauder Bard” concept was born: a ruthless heavily armored warrior wielding a heavy metal inspired guitar sword melee weapon and spiked knuckles. This unique character joins the roster of over 200 playable game characters and will be a collectible card available to all players.

What do you think? Also, we're trying to come up with a cool name for this character. One idea we had was "Marauder Metalist", given the awesome guitar sword weapon. Any other ideas?

New Characters: Mummies!

Ross had his scheduled jaw surgery today, and everything went very well! He's resting now, he's pretty swollen, totally numb, and can't talk much yet. We hope to get him a good night rested and start fresh in the morning. Ross's Surgery - Update
He made it through night 1 - hooray! It was definitely a rough night filled with bleeding, total mouth/jaw numbness, and pain. Good evening!

Each day, Ross is heading in the right direction with his healing from his double jaw surgery. He does have his phone throughout the day, and checks social media, Discord, and this Forum, and thanks you for all the kind messages! And, of course, even after a pretty tough surgery, he's still working :). He can't sit at his computer and program, but he's writing down ideas all day and making lots of awesome Summoners Fate plans.

On the art end, we have some fun characters in the pipeline including a Horse Demon, a Valkyrie, and our Empress and Emperor - and more! We love hearing if you have any new ideas, definitely post here (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?board=4.0) if there's a character or spell idea you'd love to see in the game.

Surgery Update
Some of you have asked how Ross is doing. He's 1 week out from his double jaw surgery, and every day is getting better, less swollen, and more like himself! He even sat and did a little work at the computer today. We had our 1 week checkup with the oral surgeon, and everything is looking great  8)

Marauder Metalist!  8)
This video shows some animations for the completed Marauder Metalist a character designed by one of our Kickstarter supporters, Chris Sides. This character will be able to provide support buffs to allies. Plus, the guitar riff is so potent that smaller creatures are outright destroyed upon hearing it.

Here is a video from the article where the AI-controlled Summoner casts a surprise Ice Trap, then they use their knockback ability to push my gladiator into it, taking advantage of the trap's effect during their turn. Note: the "surprise" card art icon is placeholder.

Sunday Sketch
Sunday's Sketch is our Steamclock Sentinel!

A little about this new playable character in development: when summoned, the Sentinel travels to the past. In game, this will work by rewinding to the start of your opponent's turn, giving them the opportunity to replay it, except now there's a giant robot in their way.

He is using PlayerIO for this, and learning how to use their services. As he built multiplayer for our last turn-based strategy game Hero Mages (http://heromages.com), he is confident in his ability to get this done smoothly.

New Horror Character
Do you know that feeling when you're home alone, but swear someone is there? Or that dark figure you sense is in the room just as you are trying to fall asleep? Do you know why the hairs stand up on the back of your neck?!

It's because of the Shadow, our newest addition to our Horror race (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=18.0). This character will be fun to control on the battlefield to horrify your opponent; however, make sure to leave the Shadow in your game and don't let it get in your head...it specializes in sleep paralysis and night terrors!

1st Look - Multiplayer
(From Ross) Here's a first look at the multiplayer development for Summoners Fate. Yesterday, I spent the day studying the API documentation for PlayerIO. Today, I successfully connected two clients together in a match and got interactions communicating between clients. So far, just over 100 lines of client code and 100 lines of server code added to achieve this.

I took this video quickly on my phone of my computer screen, so excuse the "roughness" of it.

The concept we told our amazing artists was our Red Imp happily bathing in fire and lava, with a little scrub brush going on.  ;D

Multiplayer Progress + Video!
(From Ross) On day 4 of multiplayer development, I've added the following: 1) Player assignment - The game will now assign you your personal team and deck you've constructed when you join the match. 2) Animation Queue - Although you can normally play as fast as you like and the game will jump animations to keep up with your speed, it's important for your opponent to be able to see and understand each action you've made. The  client will now delay each animation until complete so each move can be viewed in sequential order. 3) Reflected starting positions - As the single player mode always has the player moving from top to bottom (easiest access for controls) I've adapted the map so that it will rotate so that your team always starts on the bottom next to your cards. This functionality also works with landscape. Whichever direction you're normally used to attacking, the game will maintain that regardless of turn order in multiplayer.

For the multiplayer server, I'm using PlayerIO.

Note: This time I decided to use a screen capture software to record the video. I assure you the slow frame rate/choppiness is due to the capture software, not the game, which is running at 60FPS on both clients. I'll look into a better solution for future videos.

Spring Equinox

Classic Character Joins Summoners Fate
She's deadly, she's frightening, she's side-winding over to you!  :-[

Meet our Medusa! For those of you unfamiliar with this Gorgon, Medusa is typically described in Greek mythology as a human woman with deadly snakes for hair. All who gazed upon her turned to stone. Fortunately for our Summoners Fate opponents, she is mortal, although definitely not easy to defeat!



In our Summoners Fate dimension, Medusa moves as a snake as well. We've also equipped her with a special bow-and-arrow in the shape of interlocking snakes, making her lethal force from across the battlefield. When she looks up at you, she sticks out her serpent tongue.

Incubus Feature
Today, I wanted to feature the Incubus's awesome animations, including his flying and his double shotel spin attack. Watch:



Ross and I were toying around with the Incubus and the Succubus (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=18.msg318#msg318) characters, and having them tied to stealing your opponents mana and siphoning it to you. This would be very powerful, so you may need the pair to do both - what do you think?  :D

Playtesting
Ross is working very diligently 7 days a week to get the multiplayer ready to go and squash the coding bugs. We've had our very game-orientated 6-year-old testing it out to help with finding those bugs so we can release it soon for early access play testing (see picture below).

Frozen Cast
In Summoners Fate, it's possible for your Summoner to cast while frozen. Before we implemented this animation, it looked a little funny how your character could move within the ice block. But now we've provided a reason for how they can cast: the Orc's arm sticks out of the ice just as he freezes, allowing him to still cast a spell using just that free arm. Watch:

Team Work!
Watch our Gladiator and Giant Skeleton work together to take down a Goblin Archer. This video features the new "move and shoot" control Ross has been working on, which, for special characters like the Gladiator, allows you to release to select designated move and then select a new target to attack at range. As you see in this case, this can lead to some really awesome combos. What do you think?



Hero Mages Gaming - Sunday

Since we cannot enjoy the beta of Summoners Fate just yet, I propose to all to join a HERO MAGES live gaming session this Sunday, April 1st!  ;D
For former fans, this is a unique opportunity to put a few more hours in this tremendous game, playing with real players, maybe even reconnecting with former friends and foes!
For those who don't know Hero Mages, you can learn first hand what Ross was able to pull out by himself about 10 years ago. There is a "spectator" feature built in, so you can watch games real time (or even replay some). Be sure to install the app beforehand from the Apple store or Google Play, and create an account. And if you're tempted to try the game for yourself, I'm sure we can get a few volunteers to teach you the basics (it's not as easy to learn as Summoners Fate is, but it's sure addictive once you're past that).

So let's meet this Sunday at 2 PM MDT (9PM Western Continental Europe).

Fun with Time Spells
Here's some WIP (work-in-progress) for two of our time spells, Hyper Speed and Slow Time. By adding a property to my world clock for animation speed, I can set individual animation speed modifiers per character. The result is a super pepped up Griffin and Barbarian, or a rather slow and sluggish characters. Watch:



There are still adjustments to be made, and of course polish and FX.  What do you think so far?

New Card

One exciting and unique feature we are implementing with Summoners Fate is directional facing being meaningful to gameplay. When a character is attacked, that character can then counter-attack once per turn, maybe even resulting in the attacker receiving more damage than they dealt!

We liked this concept because it felt more real to how a battle would really be. It also adds to our focus on quick, satisfying game play as well as beefs up the strategy-planning (I may not want to attack that Mountain Troll with my 1/1 Squirrel if he can attack me right back...).

That being said, attacks from behind the character avoid the counter-attack; after all, hard to swing a sword or axe 180 degrees behind you in time! Thus, this Chaos card, Expose the Rear, is quite useful in that it will spin all enemies 180 degrees. (Now watch out Mountain Troll! Squirrel's a'coming)

We do have another layer of protection with shields. Those character with shields will prevent all physical attack damage (swords, arrows, etc.) that hit the character from the front or sides. Shields still have no defensive ability if the character is struck from the rear. The act of blocking with the shield staggers its user, causing their shield arm to drop and leaving them vulnerable to subsequent attacks.

Phoenix Friday
We're adding to our decks; meet the Phoenix!



This mythical fire bird will fly over obstacles and hover over the game board. Its death trigger is every time it's killed, his card goes BACK into your hand to be cast again, just like it is rising from the ashes. It is also immune to being frozen.

Beasts of the Sky
Dragons have always been important to Ross; in fact, I'm in his office and can count 8 dragons right now that I can see between dragon art on the wall, statues, even a giant decorative fan over the desk with two dragons on it:

That being said, when developing Summoners Fate, we both knew we had to find a way to incorporate dragons into the game - preferably more than 1. That took some work with our art team to get the right size; after all, with our top-down perspective and square grids, we needed to find a way to convey large size while also having the dragon fit onto the board without being too cumbersome. The wings, especially, were tricky to not block all characters next to the dragon.

Once we got that figured out, we went to town creating our Dragons. As of the press of this release, we have 11 finished Summoners Fate dragons to add to your deck. Here are a few new ones:

At this point we are going back-and-forth on naming the dragons after their obvious color (e.g.: Purple Dragon, Green Dragon, Blue Dragon) or after jewels, given dragons inclination towards hoarding treasure (e.g.: Amethyst Dragon, Jade Dragon, Sapphire Dragon). What are your thoughts?

Golden Dragon
Oooh...shiny.

Continuing with our Dragon race (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg404#msg404), here is our elusive Golden Dragon in all its glory. This playable character is quite vicious on the battlefield.




It is not for all to behold; this character was available only on our successful Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1181148431/summoners-fate-fast-and-fun-tactical-rpg-ccg-adven?ref=356254&token=bc2b7682) last year.


Druid Deck
We are currently working on our Druid's (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=23.msg407#msg407) deck. This deck is about summoning small forest animals, then using the power of Nature (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=36.msg88#msg88) magic to mutate them into powerful beasts of battle! Here's some fun things you can do:

Character Animation
The ultimate bodyguard - meet Flesh Golem!



After our last post, we had much interest in our Flesh Golem, a carryover from our first game, Hero Mages (http://heromages.com). For those of you that don't know, the Flesh Golem is built from the remains of rotting corpses that have been diabolically stitched together. They are bound by blood to protect the life of their masters - meaning it will take all damage dealt to its master until it perishes. It also has a sweet mace  8)

Ross Surgery Update
Our day today was mostly spent going to several doctors and surgeons. He's had some complications from his surgery 8 weeks ago (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg329#msg329), so hopefully we'll get those all squared away and he'll be good as new very soon. He's still working, of course, and we've had lots of great game discussions today during our much time together in the car. He's working diligently on the multi-player early access release.

Royalty Enters Summoners Fate
We're so excited to reveal our newest and most royal members of Summoners Fate, Emperor Cosme and Empress Camille:

We took great care in creating the look for these two important characters. As the name "Summoners Fate" implies, themes of fate vs. free will is found throughout, especially the single-player campaign. We are still writing the story, but read the origins of Emperor Cosme in our first game, Hero Mages, here (http://heromages.com/gameInfo/backgroundStory.html).

There are many nods to these themes in their looks. For example, both of their pendants are important. Emperor Cosme's incorporates a pair of scissors, a nod to the the Fates of Greek mythology, especially Atropos, who cuts the Thread of Life. Similarly, with Empress Camille, surrounding the orange gem in the middle is the Rota Fortunae, or Wheel of Fortune, that is found throughout history, and signifies the fickle nature of fate.

Can you find other symbolism in these characters? Do you think they have good or malicious intentions in Summoners Fate?

Which Faction?

Celestial Steampunk Timekeeper Rats
This Celestial (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=39.msg112#msg112) faction turns the "dirty rats" game trope on its head. Now, meet our civilized and top-hatted faction that specialize in time spells (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg398#msg398)!

The Withered's
This Void (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=42.msg144#msg144) faction consists of dried-out husks of once thriving individuals that have been afflicted by blight. While the Withered's (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=18.msg245#msg245) are technically alive, their physical form and spiritual energy has been depleted to the point of exhaustion, resulting in their wrinkled appearance. They are virtually blind and are driven to their targets by an innate hunger that can detect positive energy to absorb and sustain their being.

The Vampires
Joining the Withered's as a Void (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=42.msg144#msg144) race, these blue-skinned undead are blood-thirsty, angry, and equipped with ancient bejeweled swords. They are fated to roam the Summoners Fate world and seek to add to their team with yours...

The Satyrs
New! These humanoid beasts - the Satyrs* - will be a Neutral faction (we will go into more detail soon about this faction). Here we have, from left to right, our Warrior Satyr, our Archer Satyr, and our Champion Satyr. Our goat creatures are our take on the ancient Greek and Roman mythologies surrounding these wildlings.

Nature Magic
In honor of Earth Day yesterday, today I'm doing a feature on our Nature (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=36.msg88#msg88) spells.

Nature magic is associated with the life energy of plants and animals, evolution and survival of the fittest. Druids, elf mages, and orc shamans alike draw upon nature magic in various ways: sometimes calling upon the earth and vegetation itself and sometimes from their inner life force to augment natural fighting abilities to superior status. Nature spells include abilities to buff units power and life, mutate and transform beings into other creatures, animate and multiply life and heal and restore balance.

Progress on Campfire Menu
We recently featured (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg415#msg415) some work-in-progress components of our campfire menu. Ross is continuing to work hard on creating the dynamic and unique menu experience for Summoners Fate:

Ross has been envisioning the menu for 2 years now. Since players in many games like this spend time in the menu building their teams, selecting campaigns, etc., he wanted to swap the traditional, by-the-book menu for something more charming and natural. The feeling of being part of a team that is coming together at a fire pit in a campsite really spoke to the adventurous atmosphere we're creating for Summoners Fate.

Once we have the art in place, animation and sound effects will be added.

New Character - Cockatrice
We are excited to unveil a new mythical character, the Cockatrice (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=19.msg423#msg423). While this creature is lesser known than some of our other mythical units (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=19.0), we love it and had to include it as a playable character for Summoners Fate.



For those not familiar with the Cockatrice, it is said to have the body of a dragon (or sometimes a serpent) and the head of a rooster. Our Cockatrice will have the ability to fly over obstacles and characters, a strategic maneuver that can mean the difference between winning and losing a battle.

New Video - Double Treant Combo
This clip is an example of how you can use Bonus Attacks to your advantage in game. Bonus Attacks trigger when an enemy unit is knocked into an ally. Throwback Thursday!
Ross dug up some old photos from the year 2000 of when he and I built a castle for our miniatures using cardboard, textured paint, and balsa wood. These miniatures were from Warhammer and Warhammer 40K and were all hand-painted by us. We do still have all our miniatures (plus many more we added to our collection), but sadly not the castle.

Arcane magic (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=36.msg88#msg88) is associated with the fundamental forces that define reality including gravity, materialization, and psychic energy. Long ago, an ancient race left relics of ancient texts and technology scattered across the world. Many of these relics were collected by the wizards of the Academy of Arcane Arts, where they study and use them to manipulate the fabric of existence. Arcane spells include abilities such as the manipulation of gravity, creation of forcefields, psychic attacks, and control of positioning on the board.

Who else is an Arcane fan? When you play against Ross, he will likely be holding this deck in his hands!  ;)

When You Need Your Own Magical Box Fort


Forcefield is a powerful Arcane spell (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=36.msg88#msg88) that protects an ally character from all incoming damage. The forcefield can only be brought down by an enemy melee attack, making it a formidable defense when used in combination with your Summoner in the rear and a defensive line of melee blockers in the front. Notice how even grass underneath the forcefield is protected from the fireball.

Level Making
This weekend we've been making different maps to play for the soon-to-be-released early access multiplayer version of Summoners Fate. Here's Ross with our son last night creating some with Ross's editor tool:

Don't be fooled by his age; our little guy is quite the strategist and loves using game editors, such as in Geometry Dash and Battleblock Theater. I wonder where he gets it from... ???

We're then spending our evenings playtesting and learning when it comes to fun gameplay, "less is more;" meaning, while some blockades and traps are fun, too much is a hindrance.

Sweet Dreams are Made of These...
We introduced (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=18.msg360#msg360) this Horror creature, the Shadow (part of the Void (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=42.0) deck); now see it animated!



We've had the question posed to us about where the idea of this creature came from. Ross and I have both had trouble sleeping over the years, and have some varying ideas about nightmares and "sleep demons." We've done research on some of the theories of the causes of sleep paralysis, such as the Pisadeira, the "old hag", sleep goblins, the succubus, etc., and we knew we wanted to include some sort of cryptid-type creature in Summoners Fate that represented nightmares and the fears that creep in your brain as your eyes start to close.

We're still deciding on this creatures powers in game; what ideas do you have? ???

Couple things I want to point out to give context:

  • In case you did not know, yes, we have playable Dragons (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg404#msg404) in game and they are awesome!
  • The blue button in the upper left-hand corner is an Undo button. Undoing is available only within your turn, not whenever you want during the game. We'll do a post in the future explaining this mechanic.
  • See the heavily armored red Dreadnought (upper left)? We've implemented a separate "armor bar" for characters with heavy armor that will need to be destroyed before any damage to the character's health is affected. We'll talk more about this in a future post as well.
  • The dead tree in the upper left and the scorched area are as a result of two cast spells, Dragons Breath and Fireball. Many of our spells have a dynamic quality where the terrain will actually be affected by the actions of the characters, such as cutting down trees blocking your view. Brown Ant Animation

We get it; insects are not necessarily everyone's thing. However, for those who secretly wanted to be an entomologist (like my 5-year-old daughter does) or who loved games like SimAnt (like Ross did) or who had an ant farm and a pet praying mantis (also Ross), we have the playable faction for you! Casting Bunnies in a Cave, as you do...

Here's a recent Screenshot from an epic game of Albirich the Fighter Mage (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=23.msg282#msg282) and his Celestial (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=39.msg112#msg112) deck (pictured) vs. Sylvia the Druid (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=23.msg407#msg407) and her Nature (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=36.msg88#msg88) deck in a cave environment. As you can see, Ross was being overrun with summoned Killer Bunnies, who then were mutated (as you see in the two surrounding Albirich) to become super bunnies! A few things to note:

  • The white nests you see on the board are spider nests. We realized after seeing this screenshot that there were too big, so we have since shrunk them down. They don't currently do anything, but will likely spawn baby spiders on the board
  • See the red upside down triangles? That notes the opponent. See the red rightside up triangles inside? We added this for our colorblind players since we used the green/red colors to notate yourself/enemy, respectively
  • The 3rd card in the deck showing is different from the other two. That is because these cards are neutral - what we are calling "Free Will" cards - that any summoner can use. This will also include some characters that will be Free Will. Here's the card:

For those of you not familiar with this mythical creature, in Japanese mythology Onis are generally male demonic creatures that resemble ogres or demons. They are huge, strong, and very frightening. Their appearances can vary, but they most often have blue or red skin, wild hair, claws, horns, and carry a kanabō, a spiked and extremely heavy war club.

We aimed to stay close to the traditional description and depiction of Onis, and added some of our own uniqueness. What do you think?

Now is the time for havoc and destruction...

CHAOS (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=43.msg147#msg147)! When chaos energy flares into the physical world, its manifestations are unstable and cause potent destructive force. While destructive, Chaos is not inherently evil, and many good and innocent individuals are gifted (or cursed as some say) with the power to channel Chaos Magic. For example, Nova the Sorceress, is a notable Chaos sorceress. At a young age, she unintentionally destroyed her village with fire when her born powers were first triggered, though she herself is not malicious like the Dreadnoughts - evil inclined beings motivated by the desire to destroy the world.

In Summoners Fate, Chaos spells grant powerful destructive abilities and have the highest damage output per cost of any other magic group.

Some of the cards we've shown here may look familiar to you. With the first card, top left - Cleansing Fire - we held a vote (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg362#msg362) on which sketch art we should go with and chose the winning vote. With the second card - Spoil the Surprise - we showed sketch art (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg402#msg402) along the way to developing the final look of this important card. Finally in the Gate of Fate card, you may recognize the outline of the shadowy figure as our own Anthropod Walker (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg185#msg185), the nightmarish insectoid-crab-humanoid hybrid character.

Bug Reporting
Ross is currently working on implementing a Bug Reporting system to go out with the Early Access version. The way this will work is when the game generates an error or the user finds a bug, a report is automatically created where the user can add their notes to be sent right to us. This will be efficient for us to fix inevitable bugs/errors that will occur, especially in the early access stages, and we can squash those bugs!

More WIP Menu Development
We are working on the layout and design for the main menu of Summoners Fate. We recently featured some other WIP menu items (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg415#msg415) - now see our latest:

Fun, right? Ross had a vision that one of the menu options - Cards where, as you might guess, you can select the cards and decks you want to play - should be on something different from a typical wooden table. Then :BAM: he had a vision of an animated giant tortoise whose back would be used as the table.

What do you think so far? We're planning to make the spell books bigger and add some other details, such as possibly a mana potion and a mortar and pestle. The tortoise won't walk away, but likely his head will animate a bit, maybe his tail, too.

Who are my Skeleton race fans? Classic, creepy and so so fun to play, today let's meet the Skeleton race of Summoners Fate:

Skeleton Reaver
A lethal mix of skeleton & demon, the Reaver can deliver a devastating death blow with his morning star. His brittle old bones are easily turned to dust - luckily, he is protected by his massive shield. (In game powers: High damage, low life, Shield - Blocks the next attack)

Skeleton Warrior
He is the basic infantry of the skeleton army. Make no mistake, however - he is a formidable opponent who can use his shield to block incoming attacks. In greater numbers, Warriors can surround enemies in an unbreakable formation of shields and whittle their enemy down to the bones. (In game powers: Shield - Blocks the next attack)

Necromancer
A powerful wizard, she was doomed to a life of eternal war. The Necromancer harnesses the dark arts to summon Skeleton Warriors whenever she attacks. Quite quickly, the battlefield is filled with her undead minions storming her enemies.

Skeleton Breaker
Horrifying & dominating, the Skeleton Breaker is the elite guard of the skeleton army. He wields a massive two-handed cleaver that “breaks” the enemy, knocking them back & preventing counter attacks. He's unfeeling, unrelenting, and unforgettable on the battlefield.

Skeleton Archer
Using his steadfast bow that has joined him in the afterlife, the Skeleton Archer can terrorize his foes with his steady arrows & his uncanny presence. When defended by Warriors, the Archer uses his long, bony fingers to unleash an endless shower of arrows upon his enemies. (In game powers: Ranged Attack)

Liche King
Somewhere between Withered and Skeleton lies the summoner Liche King. His horrifying appearance is matched by his horrifying ability on the battlefield - with each damage he does to his opponent, he heals himself equally - literally sucking the life out of his enemies and getting stronger...

Skeleton Captain
Fearsome and cruel, he cackles with delight at the terror of his enemies on the battlefield, especially when he surprises them with a lunge attack using his trusty spear. When this skeletal leader is around, his allies are granted a stat boost. (In game powers: He can attack diagonally with his spear (Lunge) and has a Shield.)

Any Device You Want, You Got It
Did you know that our mobile Summoners Fate version will be available in Portrait and Landscape mode? I show a lot of screenshots in the traditional Landscape mode, but we first set out to design a game that could be easily played with one hand on Portrait mode, something we felt was definitely missing from the mobile gaming world. Did you also know that Summoners Fate will be a cross-platform game? It will be available to play on PC, Mac, and any number of mobile devices. While this gives us much more challenges insofar as programming, graphics, each platform having different design rules, etc., we are committed to providing a unique and easily accessible game experience that takes into account the device you want to play on, color-blindness, handedness - that is left- vs right-handedness, and much more.

Finished Spell Art
As you know, we have a very developed playable race of Insectoids (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=31.msg71#msg71) in Summoners Fate. Within this eclectic group is several choices in Ants with both biped vs. quadruped options, as well as various colors. This led to the idea of the Nature (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=36.msg88#msg88) spell "Ants at a Picnic" which summons Ant Soldiers on all spaces surrounding target enemy. They each attack, then vanish from battlefield; the idea being that they are a easy to defeat, but still quite annoying, such as ants at a picnic  ;D

We showed the sketch (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg374#msg374) of this spell back in March. Now see the finished spell icon:

Desert Skirmish Gameplay Video & Some Breakdowns
In the harsh desert environment, two Summoners meet to do PvP battle. Zenon the Arch Mage controls the arcane powers of gravity manipulation and mind control. Sylvia the Druid has the almighty power of throwing squirrels. Who. Will. Triumph?



There are MANY fun and tactical moments in this video insofar as gaming rules of Summoners Fate, such as backstabbing bonuses, counterattacks, characters' special abilities, and more. I'm going to break down three interesting moments and explain them more in depth here:

1. Taunt
Soul Reaver has a special ability called Taunt. Taunt will force adjacent enemies to attack her first. Because we utilize auto counterattacks (which can be countered with shields or by attacking from the rear - backstabbing), this power is...well, quite powerful! You will see this visibly displayed in the video by the aura emanating around her during this video. Watch the Squirrel try to attack a different character before being forced to attack her, and its ultimate demise:



2. Making Characters into Bombs
In this video, watch Sylvia the Druid use Detonate, a Chaos (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=43.0) spell, on the Squirrel she hurled (her attack) at Zenon the Arch Mage. That does some damage, then she takes it a step further by turning the Squirrel into a bomb. When the Squirrel attacks Zenon, he automatically attacks back (counter-attack), which is fine by Sylvia because by defeating the Squirrel, Zenon has caused much trouble for himself! Take a look at this sweet combo and clever use of counter-attack:



3. Maximizing Backstabbing Bonuses
Towards the end of the original video, Zenon uses his Arcane deck to pull off a beautiful and wonderfully manipulative combo. As you'll see in this clip, he first casts Teleport to transport across the board to attack Sylvia from behind, thus eliminating her ability to counter-attack. He takes it a step farther by then casting Off Sides, an Arcane (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=36.0) spell (created by one of our players for his Kickstarter reward!) that swaps the position of your Summoner with any unit. He swaps position with the mighty Arcane Giant, who does 5 damage against both Sylvia and her adjacent guardian, the Rogue, with his mighty crescent blade. Watch the fun unfold:



There are many more awesome moments at play here, and we'll continue to point them out in videos to come! What were some of your favorite moments in this desert skirmish?

Game Dev Update
Today Ross is adding in a Chat feature for multiplayer games. We want players to have the ability to talk to each other and know who they are playing against when playing against another human player vs. AI.

Or should we add an AI chat? That could get interesting really fast... ;D

Summoners Fate will be available on PC, Mac, and mobile devices.

With the mobile version, you will have the option of playing in Portrait and Landscape mode at any time during the game. If you flip your phone, the cards and players will adjust. GameDev Update
Thanks to your diligent bug reporting and feedback, Ross is hard at work on the next build for the Elites, including the iOS build. Our goal is to get that out as soon as possible.

Also, we've had many people inquire about when the build will be released beyond the Elite group. We will be announcing opportunities for additional playtesters; stay tuned!

1. Physical representation of explosion on the board

As you can see here, there had been a previous spell cast that caused an explosion. That explosion not only left behind charred Earth, but also burned up a previously-green-and-healthy tree. To note here, the environment of Summoners Fate battlefields on not just for artistic sake, they serve purposes and are dynamic.

2. Transformed Squirrel

Did you notice this strange beast in the initial screenshot? This is the result of casting the Animal Growth card (shown earlier in the post) on a Squirrel. Now it is equipped with a...beatin' stick!  ;D More importantly, it becomes a formidable 4/4 character (possibly more if other effects are on it) playing on your side.

Feature: Titus, the Gladiator
One character we are hearing a lot about in early access testing is Titus, our Gladiator:


Titus (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg234#msg234) is a unique character in that he has the ability to throw his harpoon at an opponent (which causes Damage), pull the opponent toward him, and then cause further melee damage. Yes, DOUBLE the damage! This attack can be further satisfying by adding opponents adjacent to where the harpooned character  is pulled:


This video features the "move and shoot" control for special characters like the gladiator, and allows you to release to select designated move and then select a new target to attack at range. As I discussed earlier, this ability allows for some interesting team work combos, such as here as  the Gladiator and Giant Skeleton work together to take down a goblin archer.

Can you see why Titus is quickly becoming a favorite?  ;)

Game run quality is very important to Ross and me. To get Summoners Fate to run beautifully on PC, Mac, and various mobile devices, Ross must do a lot of optimization and adaptations. He's been working hard on that today and finishing up the technical design to get the iOS build completed.

GameDev Update
Today Ross and our animator Peter discussed some exciting directions for the single-player campaigns. As you know, Summoners Fate will not only be cross-platform but also encompass a rich single-player experience, asynchronous, real-time and on-demand, "desynchronous" cross-platform multiplayer. Of course, you will also play how you want with support for both landscape and portrait modes.

Fixing Bugs Like a Boss
With our Early Access players, one of their tasks is letting us know about bugs in our game. While we wish they weren't there, with any early game play, it is inevitable as it is difficult to foresee all fringe cases. Ross created a streamlined and automated process for bug reports that requires less effort on our players' part and provides clear details to him about what the bug specifically is and why it occurred. He created a video to show how he's leveraging the player community and in-game telemetry and automated reporting system to find and fix bugs like a boss. 8) Watch:

While often melee and magical attacks get a lot of glory - not to mention the rip of giant claws of, say, a mighty Dragon or a gruesome Troll! - ranged attacks are quite powerful and often an underestimated strategic advantage. Blue Cave Screenshot
One of my favorite settings for Summoners Fate (and there are many of them) is the Blue Cave. The crystal-filled room has an eerie and otherworldly quality to it, and is the perfect home to various spiders and supernatural beings...

Fun Fact: Did you wonder why the life bar above Nova has a shaded look vs. all red? This was added for our color-blind players to distinguish between enemy health bars and their own characters.

Ross has been hard at work finishing up bug fixes and planning our single-player missions.

On a separate note, Ross has been working a bit each evening to teach our little guy how to ride a bike, and tonight he got it for the first time!  ;D

We are working with our animator on making our campfire menu more dynamic. Combo!
Summoners Fate features a combo mechanic that's triggered when an enemy is pushed into an ally via an attack with knockback. In this video, I've added some VFX and SFX to emphasize the combos being triggered as well as the "Overkill" mechanic where the unit has been defeated by damage greater than its remaining life.

Listening to Early Access Feedback on Spike Rules
Early Access (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg462#msg462) players have expressed confusion on the triggering of spike traps. One concern has to do with knockback. Players expect a character with knockback to cause a unit to take damage when being hit into a spike (makes sense right?) but the issue with the game was that the spikes wouldn't actually trigger damage unless the unit changed position during the knockback (ex: a character was knocked back to a new position that was next to a spike).

The second issue players had was confusion over spikes triggering damage when a character was pushed on a space next to spikes, but not directionally into the spikes. This was happening because the game trigger only checked for "enter position next to spikes". Ross has addressed the feedback by adding calculations to determine the force angle. Now, spikes will only deal damage if the unit is pushed directionally into the spikes.

Here's an older video that contains some of the old ways of spike damage. We'll update with a new one soon!

Ice Bomb/Spike Block/Crystal Golem Combo!
Fun action sequence from a recent game played. This sequence was possible because the Ice Bomb (which currently has fire placeholder art  ;)) spell cast by Zenon the Arch Mage (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg399#msg399) has Knockback, causing Li the Pyromancer (http://summonersfate.com/forums/index.php?topic=27.msg456#msg456) to go flying into the spikes:

GameDev Update
From Ross: Rounding out the fixes in version 0.25.1, I'm responding to player feedback regarding the undead's ability to steal life from their opponent. Previously, the Liche King would steal life equal to the damage dealt (in this case three) regardless of the target's remaining life. Players felt it was hard to conceive how the Liche King could steal 3 life from a 1/1 squirrel (point taken) and that it was especially out of context for effect to steal life when damaging armor. I wanted to address these concerns without our undead fans feeling the Liche King was being nerfed. The answer: I made him more powerful (albeit in a different way) while removing the perceived exploits and keeping him within context of his abilities. First, I made it so that life steal can only drain up to the maximum power of the attack or remaining life of the victim (whichever is smaller). Then, to address the armor, I gave him the Pierce ability which has a twofold effect of depleting all armor AND disarming block. So, instead of stealing life from the armor, the Liche King now cuts through it, getting to taste the sweet sweet lifeforce within.

See both changes in action within this video. Also notice that I have added a separate smaller blue number indicator to distinguish damage to armor from damage to life.

Game Dev Update
Today, Ross did some more work on the single player campaign procedural level generation system. First, he created a encounters table that, so far, allow him to create monster groups that players will appear in procedurally generated levels. He's also created a procedural dungeon system that will create a multi-stage dungeon by combining rooms from a randomly selected set of levels.

Visual Representation of Procedurally Generated Map
Here's a WIP algorithm Ross wrote for creating a procedurally generated branching saga map for Summoners Fate. Each numbered node represents a playable level. Starting from left to right, the player can choose a path of 10 levels out of possible 20 to complete the sequence. In this example, Ross hard coded the first, 9th, and 10th tiers to a fixed number of nodes. The algorithm can be customized with any number of nodes and tiers, creating limitless combinations of potential paths for players to choose. Ultimately, nodes will be customizable with symbols representing meaningful choices in types of level and monsters that may be encountered within the environment (trees for forests, skulls for dungeons, buildings for towns, etc.):

Gameplay Sunday
From Ross: Sometimes, the AI I wrote for Summoners Fate delightfully impresses me. In this video, watch as the Fighter Mage powers up for a massive attack against my Summoner and makes a clever move of using the Gladiator to pull the Fire Elemental out of the way, and using the bard to inspire before chopping out half of my remaining health.

Progression Tracking
Today's progress report: Ross has implemented Progression Tracking for single player campaigns. The prophecy map will now save your progress in the map as well as control access to levels based on the path player chooses. Additionally, your hero stats and spells will carry over from level to level.

I saw that GenCon started today, and it reminded me of 9 (yes, NINE!) years ago, when we presented our first CCG game, Hero Mages (http://heromages.com), there all weekend. We met so many fantastic people, played a lot of games, learned about the awesome cosplay culture, and unveiled Ross's first indie game to all the GenCon attendants. It was an awesome weekend, and we look forward to future Cons with Summoners Fate.  8)

GameDev Update
Today Ross is working on the deck builder flow layout. This involves designing a clean and modern UI that helps you to select your characters and build your deck. The tricky part is not only providing space because there are so many character and card choices, but also - for our mobile version - making this UI readable and easy to use in both landscape and portrait. We definitely loaded the work on by making sure our game is available for PC and mobile, portrait and landscape - but we know and believe it will be worth it when you, the player, have diverse options.

Today, I was continuing work on the deck builder UI and realized I needed a better starting point to access the actual deck builder interface and a way to separate other card related functions. Keeping with the theme of immersing the game menu within the game engine itself, I thought it would be interesting to try a sub-menu where the map zooms in to the respective component (in this case the card tortoise) and create simple contextual buttons  to access specific items. Here's how it might look. Keep in mind that the last image is just a quick placeholder mockup I spliced in, and we'll have an appropriate art driven UI for the final as well as the tortoise continuing to animate. Let me know what you think!

Today's development update: Continued progress on the deck builder system. It never ceases to amaze me just how much work it takes to get these user interface components just right, especially when overloading the controls for multiple functions. For example: swiping right/left flips through your pages of cards, but there's also a gesture to drag the card to your deck. Fine tuning these things so they feel intuitive and flow with the user's intentions is a delicate art of micro tweaks, rebuilding, and testing constantly. Considerations for desktop must also be made: more precision sensitivity, additional next page/prev page controls. Finally, one very interesting observation I've made is the need to change the layout of the portrait controls. While it's intuitive to place navigation at the top (when you're on a desktop or playing in landscape), it's incredibly difficult to build decks with one hand with essential controls at the top of device. I aim to solve that tomorrow and show some screenshots and a possible video.

Progress on Summoners Fate deck builder continues, I should be ready to put that video demo together tomorrow.

For today, I'd like to share a fellow RPG tactics indie developer's game that just released on Steam Early Access called Fell Seal, Arbiter's Mask. Like us, 6EyesStudio is a husband and wife team, also ex-EA, and also creating a tactical RPG... crazy, right?! IndieMEGABOOTH just launched the montage trailer for PAXWest18. We'll be showcasing Summoners Fate with a group of over 75 indie games and developers across 17 different countries.

What's unique about our Deck Builder interface is how we support multiple platforms in both landscape and portrait mode orientations. One of the more interesting discoveries I made while play testing on device was the need to reposition the navigation UI in portrait mode. Traditionally, navigation UI appears at the top of screen, but, when using your device with one hand, it's impossible to navigate effectively because the thumb cannot reach the top.

With this card, you can pull all enemies towards target space anywhere on the board. As you can imagine, this can be used in combination with something like a fireball card that can do maximum damage when all the enemies are close together. It can also keep a scared opponent from running away  ;)

Behold the new and improved Sperl Squirrel!

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending our local Utah Indie Game Developer night meet-up and get some great feedback from fellow developers on the latest Summoners Fate build. The top fix that came out of this was a major improvement to the drag controls - players had discovered a bug that would prevent a seamless drag when selecting a character at the edge of its standing space with the mouse. As a result of the feedback, our controls are now a whole notch better!

I'm also pleased to share a major upgrade to our visual effects thanks to our friend Daniel Sperl, creator of the Starling framework, who just released an update to his particle extension. In situations where CPU bottlenecked and created low-frame rate, VFX would appear "staggered" instead of seamless. Several players recognized this effect in our early access (particularly with the conflagration spell). I'm happy to say, the new and improved "Sperl Squirrel" is ready to go!

Father vs. Son - a Tale of Two Dragons! (Skeleton dragons, that is!)

Greetings community!

I'm pleased to announce our latest pre-release build shall be launching soon. We're in the queue waiting for Apple review as I post. In celebration I'd like to take a moment to spotlight my son, Wesley, who helped out in testing and fixing bugs in preparation for the release.

Here's a replay of one of our father/son battles where Wesley managed to unleash his "master plan" of capturing my Skeleton dragon while controlling one of his own (Two dragons?!). It was a good fight, but dad didn't go easy on him and was able to use some clever maneuvering to take down the monstrous duo. It's a great example of the kind of exiting things that can happen during gameplay: the bonding between players, the outrageous and seemingly overpowered plays, and the depth of tactics that can be leveraged to overcome even the most dire situations.

Sorry that we've been a bit quiet this week. I was out in Virginia for the week while Ross has been hard at work with meetings, programming, and handling everything else at the homefront. It was all going smoothly until Wednesday...

Our son was injured at school and it turned out he has a broken wrist. The last two day Ross was busy with doctor's visits, hospital visits, and surgery for our little guy. He's in pain, but he's healing now! It was also extra hard for our son and Ross since I was on the other side of the country and could not help them.  :'(

On the gamefront, here's a fun screenshot of the Liche King completely surrounded by a myriad of squirrels! Think he'll make it?
