Game Discussion / Void Magic
« on: November 21, 2017, 08:09:13 PM »
The Void
In the beginning, before time and space, there was the Void. The Void is the existential state of non-being. It is “nothingness” - an inherent truth and the persistent origin of all things, so speaks the scholars and ancient texts of the Academy of Arcane Arts. Accounts of those who have experienced the origin moment often speak of the Void as an emotion - the “feeling of emptiness”. It is a balance of fear and hope: fear that eternity is without meaning or purpose, forever alone in despair, and hope that within lies the potential to be something that is great and loved. This innate quality of non-being is what causes existential essence, the motion that drives the creation of all things within the universe.

Void Magic
The Void is often misunderstood and many of those gifted with its insights are driven to madness. In Summoners Fate, Void magic represents the negative state of nothingness and is associated with fear, despair, hunger and death. Dark and nightmarish beings, demons of the Void, are shadowy like creatures that feed upon the thoughts and dreams of corporeal beings. They are constant reminders of the existential balance between fear and hope. Void spells include the power to nourish by taking life, the conjuring of dark beings, and the power to bring death.

Thanks for the new suggestions, SwedishBear. The Darkness reminds me of shadow figures often sighted in conjunction with sleep paralysis. Is this something that inspired your idea?

Kickstarter Funded!

Thank you for your support! Kelly and I so grateful and excited to deliver you an amazing game. For those who supported us, stay tuned for an update regarding next steps for reward fulfillment. Post project processing on Kickstarter may take up to 2 weeks before we can send out our backer surveys. We will keep you informed on the status.

Several of you have asked about whether or not we will still include the Celestial Steampunk Timekeeper Rats for launch. While we didn't quite hit the stretch goal, we did make it halfway there and that surely counts for something. We will include the rat characters and time spells we've shown so far for launch. As for our full plans on the full race, we have said that Summoners Fate will run as a service with regular content updates. Anyone up for a steampunk time-travel themed first expansion? ;)

Awesome suggestions, Swedishbear, and thank you for including the nice concept images to go with them! The "discard" ability of the divine lamb is very interesting - and quite debilitating, given that players only have 3 cards and only draw at the end of turn ;)

Another spell
Nature- If there is water on the board summon a Wakandagi in a space adjacent to a waterspace. If no waterspace is near discard this card and get a Wakandagi to your hand.

Nature - Trap. Place this on a waterspace. When a character enters a space adjacent to this trap a kraken appears with its tentacles and draws down the character to the depth. Summoners loose half their life instead.

Great ideas, Swedishbear! The kraken tentacles sounds pretty horrific. I would extend it to also include characters walking adjacent to the water for added chance of drowning.

Not sure if you are already implementing this or not.

Stasis: All damage and actions - either given or received - by target are negated for a turn. Playable on both friendly and enemy characters.

Guessing this might be either Celestial or Arcane in nature. Wherever it would fit best...

Edit: Gah! Totally missed the Arcane spell Freeze and the Celestial spell Freeze Time. That's what I get for replying to this thread before reading the entire forum.

I actually really liked your Statis idea when I first read it - no need to ever be bashful about submitting an idea even if the idea has already been shared. In this case, however, I actually think your idea is quite different from any of the spells proposed so far. It reminds me a bit of "Fog" from MtG, one of the nastier green spells that completely destroy someone's entire turn when timed right. In this case, I would consider having Statis be a card deployed as a surprise (hidden from the opponent) so that the opponent doesn't know which character has the negate protection. Great suggestion!

Welcome to our community, Halftea! I, too, cherish the flexibility to walk away from and resume games as life demands. Summoners Fate has been designed from the beginning to accommodate this very need and I can't wait to share it with you.

Less than 24 Hours Left on Kickstarter
With less than 24 hours now left on the campaign, I'd like to share a recent interview I did with Seth Burn for the Anime Herald that expresses in thorough, honest detail why Kelly and I are making this game, why we chose to do this Kickstarter, and just how important you, our community, are to us.

Read this Interview and Understand Why You and this Project are so Important to Us

"Ross Przybylski is a man with a story in his heart, and a game to share with the world."

"No one should ever wait to do what they want to do in their life because it could be over tomorrow. That was a gift [my dad] left me."

"There are more powerful things to strive for in life than money. For us, building this game and the positive community around it, creating a haven for fans of these genres to reconnect and share fun experiences – in any small bit that this helps make the world a more enjoyable place to be – that is something we are both proud to spend our lives doing."

Last Chance for Exclusive Rewards
Kelly and I have designed Summoners Fate as a community service that we aim to run for the next 10+ years. We are hoping this becomes akin to a hobby that you continue to enjoy well into the future, even as other games come and go. Because of this, I would like to call to your attention that our Kickstarter will be offering several exclusive reward opportunities that will not be available down the road. These rewards were carefully chosen as our way of saying "Thank you" to everyone who believed in us and pledged support during this Kickstarter.

While the Hellhound Puppy will be an obtainable character in the game (albeit, very rare and hard to come by) the opportunity to give your puppy a customized name that will appear on his card is a Kickstarter-only exclusive.

The Golden Dragon is a creature we created exclusively as a Kickstarter reward. This legendary character is a benevolent guardian dedicated to protecting mythic treasure, arcane spells, and other secrets. They are wise, ancient, and possess great mystical abilities. Kickstarter will be the only opportunity to obtain this exclusive card.

We are also offering the opportunity to design your own cards, be in the game as a playable character, and create your own custom dungeon that will become a location in the world for all players to explore - and you get the credit! I'd also like to call out that every reward tier contains all of the reward tiers below. For example, if you choose "Ravager of Fate", not only will you get to design your own custom boss character, you will also get to create a custom playable character in your likeness AND create a custom spell card (plus receive Golden Dragon, all of the bundled card rewards, etc.)

Thanks for being a valued part of our community!
Whether or not you've decided to support our Kickstarter, Kelly and I grateful to have you a part of our player community and value each of you for being a fan and supporter of our team and the games we make. Thank you!

Hi everyone!

I'll be doing the daily updates today ;D

The Joy of Working Together

Many of you have suggested I talk more about our team. I was inspired by your encouragement and it's my pleasure to share this article I wrote about Kelly: Why Hiring My Wife was my Best Decision as an Indie Dev

Introducing the Celestial Steampunk Timekeeper Rats

In our Monday update, we shared some sketches of these wonderful creatures, and today I'm excited to share these beautiful full color renders that our art team graciously made a top priority. From left to right, we have the Time Bombardier, a ranged unit that can throw "time bombs" that damage and slow enemy movement, the Time Keeper, a powerful Summoner with the power to cast Celestial Time Spells, and the Time Warrior, a cunning melee fighter with hyper speed and lightning reflexes.

Here is a selection of some of the Celestial Time spells we've created so far. Time manipulation mechanics such as these are one of many unique innovations we aim to bring to the tactics and CCG genres. To learn more about Celestial Magic, the Steampunk Rats, and Time Spells, visit this forum post and join our discussion.

Reminder - Less than 48 hours left on our Kickstarter
There's still time left to support us and reach the Celestial Steampunk Timekeeper Rats Stretch goal!

Game Discussion / Celestial Magic, Steampunk Rats & Time Spells
« on: November 15, 2017, 11:09:08 AM »
Within the moment of eternal chaos that precludes existence, the infinite possibilities give rise to consciousness and order. In this moment, celestial minds came into being and asked a crucial question that would result in the creation of the world: “Why are we here and what is our purpose?” Through contemplation of this question, they perpetuated the divine act of separating light and dark, collective soul and individuality, fear and hope. Their purpose: to attain everlasting contentment and love. Ever drawn back to the darkness of the Void through the innate existential balance, they devised a mechanism that would ensure their success: the dimension of time. Through the existence of time, individuality and meaningful narratives could take place, with the souls of trillions of individual beings acting as tiny mirrors, reflecting back upon one and other powerful emotions of life, love and discovery.

Celestial Magic is associated with divine order, light, love, spiritual energy and the dimension of time. This magical energy is drawn from celestial beings and the existential ether that shapes and forms the basis of reality. Celestial spells include powerful healing and protection abilities, light energy that can banish demons of the Void and repel the destructive forces of Chaos, and the ability to control time itself.

Celestial Steampunk Timekeeper Rats are an ancient race that was chosen by the celestials to safeguard and protect the secrets of time from those who would try and disrupt the divine order. The rats are a sophisticated and highly evolved race, good natured and lawful. They are small in stature, standing about three feet tall on average, wear fancy, multiple layers of clothing, and are equipped with clockwork relics that allow them to control and manipulate the fabric of time. They work exceptionally well together as a team.

Celestial Time Spells
Below are a selection of spells we have conceived of so far to go with the Celestial Steampunk Timekeeper Rat theme. Time manipulation mechanics such as these are one of many unique innovations we aim to bring to the tactics and CCG genres.

Medusa (the Classic form, human with snakes instead of hair or a snakes body with human upperpart and snakes instead of hair) - Ability : Then attacked in the front she stuns the enemy for X turns (x is to be decided).

Werepeople, (I really liked the idea of the kid becoming a ghost). So I thought about werewolf turning from a human to a werewolf. But why stop with werewolf, why not a werebear, weretiger and so on. Perhaps having a character to be a werething and then randomly decide what kind of werecreature it is and they all have different abilities.

Another kind of character is the different hybrids of animal who is humanized like Catpeople and so on.

A basilisk, the medieval version (the front of the body is like a roaster and the back is like a snake).

These are all excellent suggestions, SwedishBear! Clearly the medusa will need an appropriate petrification ability as you suggest that turns her enemies into stone. I also like the idea of werecreatures - and extending on that, the notion of the lycanthropy disease/curse that can afflict characters attacked by these creatures, transforming them at random and placing them in a feral and unpredictable state.

Questions / Re: Counter spell card?
« on: November 13, 2017, 08:07:11 PM »
So is the counter spell going totally negate another spell card or will there be limitations? Some of the spell cards are pretty drastic. Having the option to totally negate it would be interesting.

Counterspell will totally negate the next spell an enemy tries to cast ;)

When you play cards with surprise abilities like counterspell or traps, the card you played won't reveal until its effect is triggered.

Really liking the variety in the cards.

Thank you! Glad to hear that ;D

Yeah, I also love the card templates. I'm hyped about this game to no end. You guys do an amazing job of it.

Thank you! I'm so excited to finally share the cards with you. For the longest time, it was all character art. The cards really start to show the gameplay personality.
